What to confirm first.
- State the standard explicitly: DIN 939 double-end studs and DIN 975 all-thread rods are different products with different joint behavior.
- For flanged pressure joints, specify ASME B16.5 or DIN 938/939 with grade 8.8/10.9 or B7 plus the nut grade; never substitute general-purpose threaded rod.
- A threaded rod is full-length threaded and cut to size; a stud bolt has fixed thread runs, so order by total length and thread length, not by meter.
- Confirm material certificate needs (EN 10204 3.1) and coating (zinc, HDG or PTFE) in the RFQ to avoid re-quoting.

Use a threaded rod when you need a continuous-thread, cut-to-length rod for hanging, anchoring, bracing or light-to-medium fastening jobs.

What is a stud bolt?
A stud bolt has threads on both ends only, leaving a plain (unthreaded) shank in the middle. This design is preferred in flanged joints because the shank keeps the flanges aligned while the two nuts pull them together, and the thread runs are short, durable and easy to torque.
In metric practice, DIN 938 defines a stud with a length roughly equal to one nut thickness, DIN 939 a stud with about twice the nut thickness (the common double-end stud used for flanges), and DIN 940 a parallel shank stud for higher accuracy joints. In American practice, ASME B16.5 specifies both fully threaded and double-end stud bolts for pipe flanges, and ASTM A193 B7 is the most widely requested alloy steel grade for pressure applications.
A stud bolt must be installed with a nut on each end. It is used where both sides of the joint are accessible, which is why flange faces on pipe spools, valve bonnets and pump casings are the classic applications.
What is a threaded rod?
A threaded rod, or all-thread rod, is threaded over its entire length. DIN 975 is the common metric all-thread standard; ASTM A307 and A36 cover common carbon steel threaded rods in American sizes. Because the threads run end to end, the rod can be cut to any length, threaded into tapped holes, or joined with nuts, washers and couplers.
Typical applications include pipe hangers, threaded rod anchors (with wedge or sleeve anchors), HVAC and cable tray supports, bracing, tie-downs and light structural connections. For heavier engineering work, grade 8.8 all-thread rod and alloy B7 threaded rod are available, but the rod itself is still a general-purpose connector rather than a joint-controlled bolting product.
How the standards differ for your order
The ordering language differs between the two products:
- A stud bolt is ordered by type or standard, thread size, length between ends and material grade, for example "DIN 939 M16 x 160, 8.8" or "ASME B16.5 2-1/2 in. Class 150, B7 stud bolts with two heavy hex nuts." - A threaded rod is ordered by standard, diameter, material grade, coating and total length to be cut, for example "DIN 975 M12 x 1000, A2 stainless" or "All-thread rod 3/8 x 6 ft, A307."
If you write "threaded rod" on a flange requisition, suppliers may quote a general-purpose DIN 975 rod instead of a pressure-grade B7 or B16.5 stud bolt. Always state the applicable standard and grade.
Material grades and finishes to specify
Stud bolts for flanged and pressure service typically use property classes 5.8, 8.8 and 10.9 in carbon steel, or ASTM A193 B7 (42CrMo-type alloy), B16 and B8M stainless in American sizes. For metric pressure joints, 8.8 and 10.9 double-end studs with corresponding nuts are common, and stainless A2-70 and A4-80 cover corrosion-resistant service.
Threaded rods commonly use 4.8 and 8.8 in carbon steel, A2 and A4 stainless, and low-carbon A36 or A307 in American sizes. Coating affects installation and corrosion life: zinc plating suits indoor use, hot-dip galvanizing suits outdoor or humid service, and PTFE or other anti-gall coatings suit stainless studs in flanged joints.
When to use a stud bolt, when to use a threaded rod
Choose a stud bolt for: - Pipe flanges per ASME B16.5 or DIN EN 1092 flanges - Pressure vessels, pumps, valves, covers and bonnets - Joints where a bolting standard, material certificate and controlled preload are required - Vibration or cyclic-load joints where plain shank guidance helps
Choose a threaded rod for: - Pipe and duct hangers - Anchoring and tie-down work - Cable trays, strut systems and HVAC supports - Cut-to-length connections and quick bracing - Prototyping or non-critical assembly
How to specify a stud bolt or threaded rod in an RFQ
Provide the following information together so the supplier can confirm material, heat treatment and certification:
- Product type and standard: DIN 938/939/940, DIN 975, ASME B16.5, ASTM A193 or other - Thread size and pitch, for example M12 x 1.75 or 1/2 in.-13 UNC - Length: total length, thread length at each end (stud bolts), or length to be cut (rods) - Material and grade: 8.8, 10.9, B7, B16, A2-70, A4-80, A307, A36 - Surface treatment: plain, zinc, hot-dip galvanized, PTFE or other - Mating parts: nut grade and washer type if the drawing requires matching pieces - Quantity, tolerances, inspection and certificate requirements (for example EN 10204 3.1 on pressure service)
For flanged joints, also state the flange standard, pressure class and bolt-hole pattern so the supplier can confirm the correct stud length and diameter.
Sources and standards to reference
DIN 938, DIN 939 and DIN 940 define metric double-end studs. DIN 975 defines metric all-thread rod. ASME B16.5 covers pipe flange bolting in American sizes, and ASTM A193 covers alloy steel bolting materials for high-temperature and pressure service. ASTM A307 covers common carbon steel threaded rod. Always verify the current edition of the standard and the certificate requirements of your project before ordering.
